My name is Jamaal Bowman, and I’m the Congressman for New York’s 16th District, which includes the northern Bronx and lower Westchester.
Here are a few things you should know about me:
- I’m a lifelong New Yorker, born and raised. I was raised by a single mom who worked for the USPS for 33 years. My mother raised me and my sisters to live our lives with love and joy, with and for each other. She built a family of love through us — her kids — and her grandkids.
- I’ve been an educator for the last 20 years. Most recently, I was a principal at the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, a public middle school in the Bronx that I helped found with a strong emphasis on student voice, holistic education, cultural awareness, and love.
- I’m a child of the golden age of hip hop (Wu-Tang Forever). Hip hop is a culture of community transformation that brings solutions of peace and creativity. I sometimes take to Instagram Live to play old-school hip hop, and you can check out my GOTV playlist to listen to some of my favorite tunes.
But the most important thing you should know about me is that I’m in Congress to do two things: to meet the immediate needs of our communities and create big, bold policies to build a better future.
This is only the start of that work. There’s a lot that needs to be done, which is why I’m glad you’re now a part of our community. We need you and your voice in Congress.
Thank you for joining our grassroots movement today. Peace and love!
More soon,
Jamaal Bowman
