Hi folks,
Here goes.
Things are not great for our newsroom.
We had huge plans for this year. After successfully merging Passage and The Maple, we wanted to aggressively grow our journalism, disrupt mainstream narratives, and become a leading media voice for everyone left out by corporate media.
But now we’re facing threats to our long-term survival.
Big Tech companies are blocking Canadian news from their social platforms. Meanwhile, legacy media companies are in decay, laying off journalists, and losing the trust of the public. And the gap is being filled by billionaire-funded anger passing off right-wing propaganda as news.
The range of choices in Canadian media is shrinking. And as a publication focused on the material concerns of people not the powerful corporations, we are being pushed more and more to the sidelines by the rich and powerful.
Against all these odds, our publication is still punching above its weight. So far this year, our journalism has been read by over 160,000 Canadians. And it’s been viewed across social media by over 6,000,000 users. That’s with a team of just two journalists and a shoe-string budget.
With social media giants cutting off our viewership, the next few months are going to be a critical test.
We have been fundraising to create an emergency fund to get through this test. But with 72 hours left, we’re still 110 new members short of our must-hit target.
Will you join as a member to ensure we survive this critical juncture and continue publishing independent journalism that punches above our weight?
We know these emails asking for support are annoying. Trust us. We wouldn’t be doing it if we had any other choice.
But we have no corporate ad money or secretive billionaires backing our work.
Every article, op-ed, or investigation we publish is funded entirely by readers like you.
Even with all the odds stacked against us, our publication is growing and reaching more Canadians. Offering them news and perspectives that the corporate media often ignores.
But to get through the next few months, we need to succeed in hitting this emergency fundraising target. Right now, we’re 110 new members short of that goal. With only 72 hours left, will you consider becoming a member and be the lifeline we need to keep our independent journalism alive?
Apologies again for these extra email. We’re grateful you’re considering or even tolerating them.
The Maple team.
