Remember when the “China election interference” news first blew up a few months back?
For weeks it was all the media was talking about — every legacy media outlet, all the pundits and for the most part, all in lock step.
In contrast, our publication was one of the few to scrutinize the coverage. Why? Because we don’t believe in parroting unverified info from Canada’s intelligence community.
Here’s the thing: independent media can’t replace the mainstream. But we can act as an important counterbalance.
It’s why, yesterday, we launched a deep dive series to look at “foreign interference” through a more critical lens, exploring issues often ignored by corporate media.
But just as we’re launching one of our most ambitious journalistic projects, we’re also coming under attack.
Google and Meta are blocking Canadian news from their platforms. It could drain our publication of half our new readership and members who support us financially.
Our emergency fundraising campaign is in its last week. But we’re still 150 new members short of our target. If you’ve been considering supporting us, now’s the time. Will you become a member and sustain our non-profit journalism like our upcoming deep dive series?
Why is foreign inference never about how right-wing governments from abroad lobby our politicians?
How do the spectres of “foreign interference” and “disinformation” reinforce the national security apparatus? Perhaps even distract us from domestic problems?
Is it fair to say Canada is just a passive pawn that’s “interfered” with, when Canada is a player in geopolitics that makes its own choices?
What about the fact that Postmedia is owned by an American hedge fund? Why is the rotting influence of capital and money ignored when it comes to foreign interference? What about American money flowing into right-wing think tanks in Canada?
These are the potential questions we want to explore in our upcoming deep-dive series. But if we fall short in this week’s emergency fundraising drive, more than this series could be at stake.
As social media platforms block out Canadian news, our website traffic will plummet. As a result, we’ll start seeing fewer people supporting our journalism.
But we have a plan to weather the storm. If we can bring on 150 more supporting members, we’ll have a strong emergency fund to cushion the impact. Big Tech can try to silence us, but with your support, we can persevere.
With only 5 days of our fundraising drive left, will you join as a member and ensure we can withstand Big Tech’s assault on independent media?
Thank you for considering this ask.
Sincerely, The Maple team.
