When we heard that our social media accounts could be blocked by Google and Meta, we made an emergency plan.

Losing access to these platforms means losing 50% of how Canadians discover our journalism. And with fewer readers, we’d also have fewer supporting members who sustain our publication.

Around $15,000. That’s what we estimated we need as an emergency fund to get through this crisis. And that broke down to roughly 250 new members – so we set out to hit that goal by July 31.

But with just one week to go, we are way off track.

We’ll be frank. This fundraising drive is critical. It could make the difference between our publication weathering this storm… or not.

More than sixty people have joined this fundraising drive – but we’re still 70% away from our target. With only a week left to go, will you become a member so we have the emergency funds to sustain our non-profit journalism as Google and Meta blacklist Canadian news?

If Google and Meta follow through with permanently blocking Canadian news, it could be the end for independent media like us.

Unlike big media corporations, we have no investors or shareholders to bail us out. Unlike right-wing “new” media, we have no ad dollars or secretive funders who back our reporting. It’s always been everyday people who choose to support us that have made our publication possible.

Unfortunately, big tech social media platforms are the main way most Canadians discover independent media like us.

Here’s the good news. We’ve got a great community of readers built around email newsletters. With enough resources, we’re confident we can weather the storm. If just one percent of people reading this email became supporters, we’d blow past our goal.

So what do you say – will you become a member and back us up as we resist Big Tech’s silencing of independent news in Canada?

Thank you for considering this ask and tolerating our extra emails.

Cheers,
The Maple Team
