This is it folks.
Our midnight deadline is fast approaching. And we’re still 47 supporters short.
By now, you are likely aware of the dire situation we are facing due to Big Tech's blackout of Canadian news. As an independent news outlet, this emergency fundraising campaign has become absolutely critical for our survival and future success.
Don’t believe us? Here’s what other independent journalists are saying:
“Journalism holds the lifeblood of democracy, and it’s bleeding out in the street. While we squabble about which ambulance to take, foreign tech behemoths are chasing it down to bludgeon it more, in case it’s not dead yet.” – Sandy Garossino, National Observer
“This is an existential risk. It feels like a bomb has just been put in the center of our business models," says Jeanette Ageson, publisher of The Tyee. "Smaller digital players would be disproportionately affected by a news block because we don't have the name brand recognition that the bigger news brands have."
“Caught between the tough talk rhetoric from the government and the media lobby’s bet that blocked links under Bill C-18 was just a bluff, are the independent, digital-first, and non-profits that are looking at a disaster. – Michael Geist, Professor of Internet Law
The truth is, Canadian independent media outlets are fully aware of the impending threat—an existential crisis is on the horizon. We urgently need to reach our fundraising goal by midnight to establish a robust emergency fund that can help us weather this storm.
If we miss our target, we risk having to cut back on some journalism to be prepared for Big Tech’s blackout. This will be a huge loss for independent media and the people who rely on it to get the stories the corporate media ignores. It will also be a big win for those who don’t want a space for critical and dissenting voices.
It’s our last chance to change that. Our crowdfunding ends at midnight and we need 47 more readers to join in and support our journalism – will you be the one that closes the gap?
Thanks for putting up with all these fundraising emails these past two weeks. We appreciate everyone who’s beared with us and continues to support our work – whether that's through a membership, donation, or simply reading our journalism.
Thank you. The Maple team.
