Hi folks,
We’re now under 48 hours away from our emergency fundraising deadline.
Unfortunately, we are alarmingly close to missing our target.
Google and Meta’s blackout of Canadian media could intensify any day. And we need to hit this goal to have a robust emergency fund to get through it. If we can’t hit our goal, we’ll have to make some tough choices.
We have some of our biggest journalistic projects in the works:
- Our deep-dive series examining “foreign interference” from a critical lens
- Our re-launch of a brand new podcast series (coming soon)
- A new database unveiling provincial politicians’ involvement in real estate investment
But if by Monday night, we miss our target, we’ll have to be more careful with how we spend our resources. And that means cutting down or holding back on some of our big projects.
We’re still 89 supporter members short of our July 31 target.
It’s crunch time – and every bit of support makes a difference. So if you are able to, please consider becoming a member and ensuring that we don’t have to restrain our non-profit journalism just to make it through the next few months.
Our most significant project at risk is our upcoming deep dive series. We planned on looking into so many different issues, including:
- The overlooked influence of right-wing governments from abroad on our politics.
- How "foreign interference" and "disinformation" divert attention from domestic issues and reinforce the national security apparatus
- How American money and hedgefunds flow into Canada and influence everything from news empires like Postmedia to right-wing think tanks that shape policy
But if we can’t make up ground fast, we’ll have to limit which stories we can cover. It’s the last thing we’d want to do – but it would be our only option.
There’s under 48 hours left and we’re still 89 members short of our goal. We won’t sugarcoat it – there’s a very real possibility we will fall short. But it's up readers like you.
At this critical juncture, will you become a supporting member so we can survive Big Tech’s blackout of Canadian news without sacrificing our big independent journalism projects?
Thank you. The Maple team.
